Monel Rods are amongst the most resilient ones, especially when it comes to being used in marine engineering based applications. Because of the very high percentage of copper in the Monel Rod, it has the ability to resist corrosion when immersed in brine solutions or in applications that have salts of sodium chloride. On any given day, the percentage of salt in water bodies (oceans & seas) amounts to approximately 3.5% of its weight. Salt solutions are often corrosive, but it is the content of chlorine in salt that makes it an issue for metals.

Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy (about 67% Ni 23% Cu) resistant to seawater and steam at high temperatures as well as to salt and alkali solutions. Alloy 400 is a solid solution alloy that can be hardened only by cold working. This nickel alloy exhibits properties such as good corrosion resistance, good weldability and high strength. A low corrosion rate in fast flowing brackish or seawater combined with excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in most fresh waters and its resistance to a wide range of corrosive conditions have led to its wide use in marine and other non-oxidising chloride solutions. This nickel alloy is particularly resistant to hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid when vented. As expected from its high copper content, alloy 400 is rapidly attacked by nitric acid and ammonia systems.
Monel Rod Manufacturer State that Monel 400 has excellent mechanical properties at subzero temperatures, can be used at temperatures up to 1000 F, and its melting point is 2370-2460 F. However, the strength of alloy 400 in the annealed condition is low, so a variety of annealers can be used to increase the strength.
In metals that undergo passivation, the chlorine bites into the passivity layer and promotes the formation of rust. Yet, because of the addition of copper in the alloy, Monel Rod Manufacturer and suppliers recommends its use across several marine based applications. Copper, in combination with nickel in the alloy, forms a formidable alloy. In rapidly flowing water, the Monel Rod exhibits corrosion rates that are very low. In comparison to conventional stainless steel alloys such as grade 304, the Monel Rod would fare better in marine environments.
